Ergonomics journals recommended by the International Ergonomics Association (IEA)

Ergonomics

Publisher : Taylor & Francis

Ergonomics is the Official Journal of the Ergonomics Society and the International Ergonomics Association. It is an international, multidisciplinary, refereed journal with a 40 year traditional of excellence. Ergonomics is concerned with research into all aspects of the interactions of human beings and their work and leisure, including psychological, physiological, anatomical and engineering design aspects.

As well as peer-reviewed scientific papers, the Journal publishes a regular news section, Ergonomics International, in conjunction with the International Ergonomics Association. The Journal also features a lively section of book reviews and a ‘Notes and Commentaries’ section. Readers include ergonomists and human factors engineers, physiologists, psychologists, product designers, HCI practitioners, occupational health and health and safety professionals, manufacturing and industrial engineers, organisation and production managers.

Ergonomics is abstracted in numerous databases, including ISI Science Citation Index®, ISI Social Sciences Citation Index®, MEDLINE®, BIOSIS®, Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, Occupational Safety and Health Database (OSH-DB), CINAHL, PsycINFO, PASCAL, E-psyche and Ergonomics Abstracts. The Journal has an impressive impact factor of 0.853 (2003 value), and is ranked third out of thirteen journals in the ISI ‘Ergonomics’ category.

International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction

Publisher : Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc.

The International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction addresses the cognitive, social, health, and ergonomic aspects of work with computers. It also emphasizes both the human and computer science aspects of the effective design and use of computer interactive systems. The journal presents original research both in the generic aspects of interface design and in the special application of interface design in a variety of diversified leisure and work activities.

Professionals with an interest in the scientific implications and practical relevance of how computer systems should be designed and/or how they are actually used.

Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing

Publisher : John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The purpose of Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing is to facilitate discovery, integration, and application of scientific knowledge about human aspects of manufacturing, and to provide a forum for worldwide dissemination of such knowledge for its application and benefit to manufacturing industries. The journal covers a broad spectrum of ergonomics and human factors issues with a focus on the design, operation and management of contemporary manufacturing systems, both in the shop floor and office environments, in the quest for manufacturing agility, i.e. enhancement and integration of human skills with hardware performance for improved market competitiveness, management of change, product and process quality, and human-system reliability. The inter- and cross-disciplinary nature of the journal allows for a wide scope of issues relevant to manufacturing system design and engineering, human resource management, social, organizational, safety, and health issues. Examples of specific subject areas of interest include: implementation of advanced manufacturing technology, human aspects of computer-aided design and engineering, work design, compensation and appraisal, selection training and education, labor-management relations, agile manufacturing and virtual companies, human factors in total quality management, prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders, ergonomics of workplace, equipment and tool design, ergonomics programs, guides and standards for industry, automation safety and robot systems, human skills development and knowledge enhancing technologies, reliability, and safety and worker health issues.

International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics

Publisher : Elsevier Science

The journal covers all aspects of industrial and occupational ergonomics, including such topics as human productivity, work-station design, methods engineering, design-oriented cognitive engineering, musculoskeletal injuries, design of tools, machines, controls and displays, safety, physical/mental stress and fatigue, modelling of the human body and human response behaviour, environmental stresses, etc. Moreover, the journal encourages the submission of articles dealing with the application of ergonomic principles to advanced manufacturing, such as FMS, interface design and robotics, as well as the submission of non-traditional articles, such as those involving the application of computers and systems methodologies to ergonomics. From time to time, the journal publishes special editions dealing with pressing ergonomic issues.

Applied Ergonomics

Publisher : Elsevier Science

Applied Ergonomics is aimed at ergonomists and all those interested in applying ergonomics/human factors in the design, planning and management of technical and social systems at work or leisure. Readership is truly international with subscribers in over 50 countries. Professionals for whom Applied Ergonomics is of interest include: ergonomists, designers, industrial engineers, health and safety specialists, systems engineers, design engineers, organizational psychologists, occupational health specialists and human-computer interaction specialists.

Applied Ergonomics welcomes original contributions on the practical applications of ergonomic design and research. Areas covered include applications in the office, industry, consumer products, information technology and military design.

Theoretical Issues in Ergonomics Science

Publisher : Taylor & Francis

Theoretical Issues in Ergonomics Science (TIES) stimulates and develops a theoretical basis for the science of ergonomics, and thus formulates a methodology for this modern discipline. The Journal is proactive in its mission to develop a unique science, and seeks to define ergonomics as distinct and inherently valuable for the global knowledge community. TIES provides an important forum for the presentation and debate of new ideas and thinking in this field.

TIES emphasizes new knowledge, publishing only original, high-quality, peer-reviewed papers. Topics include both qualitative and quantitative methodological frameworks and theories of ergonomics. Reviews and commentaries are commissioned. The Journal presents papers that discuss principles of the investigative process in ergonomics research, social and historical issues, and 'science of science' perspectives on ergonomics. It also publishes papers examining the discipline itself, including bibliographical analyses of classic papers.

Unlike any other ergonomics journal published today, TIES focuses on a broad array of theoretical issues, methodology, and philosophical dialogues within the science of ergonomics.
