Encyclopedia of Occupational Health and Safety, 4th Ed. Stellman, JM, ed. International Labor Office , Boyd Printing, 1998.
The Encyclopedia is a comprehensive review of occupations, hazards, occupational exposures, relevant anatomy and physiology, the effects of work design and organization, regulatory frameworks, and the theory and philosophy of occupational health. Volume IV includes sample worker information sheets by occupation, summaries of chemical effects, and a detailed index. There are some gaps and some areas unfamiliar in the US. For example, the section on the forearm, wrist and hand does not discuss carpal tunnel syndrome or ulnar nerve compression. The book is more about exposure, analysis, and prevention than about diagnosis or treatment. There are descriptions of occupational health services in various countries. The Encyclopedia is an excellent source of overview information on most occupational health and safety topics and a good place to start a more detailed inquiry (4 volumes – more than 4,000 pages, 1000 illustrations, hardcover, ISBN 9221092038; CD-ROM ISBN 9221098184; searchable on-line version also available).
